From what I understand, this is something that is unique to a husband and wife relationship regarding their marriage commitment. That legal union where they promise to love and cherish one another till “death do them part.” As I look at the definition and possibly even the motivation for this word “divorce,” it all seems so negative, so hurtful, so divisive. It’s not a loving, caring, comforting word. Here are some of the words the dictionary uses to define divorce: “dissolved, separate, dissolution, cut off, disunion, to take away, to put away.” I can understand why God would say HE HATES divorce (Malachi 2:13). It is the polar opposite of His command to live at peace with all men (Romans 12:18), and “owe nothing to anyone except to love one another” (Romans 13:8). I’ll just bet if each one of us would function in a 1 Corinthians 13 way, applying love in the way Jesus Christ did, in a self-sacrificing way, we would hear the word divorce less often. Lord, grant me the will to unify not separate.
I love You God. I trust You God. I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me. Thank You God.
