Hmm… Marriage? I wonder if I truly comprehend this most basic word, this God-designed, God-ordained union. Marriage is an interesting adventure. I see two people, each with their own individual thoughts, ideas, desires, wishes, and mental constructs willfully joining together. Joining together in what we think is a mutual benefit, but quite possibly with more selfish undertones than we may want to admit. And I’m thinking those selfish undertones are clamoring to the top, hence the sad state of marriages in our culture today.

When did marriage start? God decreed it from the beginning. What is God’s design for marriage? What is His intent? Let’s look into His Word. There seems to be more going on here than just two people joining together. Ephesians 5:15-17, 30-32 “Therefore be careful how you walk, not as unwise men but as wise, making the most of your time, because the days are evil. So then do not be foolish, but understand what the will of the Lord is. Because we are members of His body. (Jesus Christ nourishes and cherishes this body — the church.) For this reason a man shall leave his father and mother and shall be joined to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh. This mystery is great; but I am speaking with reference to Christ and the church.”

Somehow a committed, lifelong, usually self-sacrificing, mutually nourishing marriage is an example of Christ and the church. Lord, help me understand this and do this.

I love You God. I trust You God. I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me. Thank You God.
